Aulonocara
Aulonocara are my favorite family of Malawi African cichlids. The various haplochromines are beautifil also, especially Placidochromis Phenochilus. Aulonocara are known as "peacocks" and some call them "Malawi butterflies" because of their variety of color. Many compare them to the color of salt water fish ! I wouldn't go that far but they are not far behind in my opinion and much easier to take care of.
I have been asked many times what is my favorite aulonocara. That is a tough question to answer! I quess I don't have one particular one but I do favor several, including Aulonocara maisoni, Aulonocara ngara, Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (red eureka and albino eurekas), Aulonocara maulana ( bi-color 500), Aulonocara baenschi, Aulonocara reds, Aulonocara mamelela (lemon jakes) and several Aulonocara stuartgranti ! I also think the hybred "Aulonocara" dragon blood is a very beautiful fish even though it is man made.
There is so much I want to say about Aulonocara that I am going to write about these in segments as it will take some time. I am planning on giving picture examples and opinions of various Aulonocara along with my opinions and color examples of food coloration and photography. I have lots of opinions on these two subjects as I have seen the affects that both are having on selling fish in the hobby !
Stay tuned if you would like.
Thanks
Rick
